Description
Brazilian dress sabre. c. 1831-89, OAL 940mm. Blade: steel, L. 816mm, German, single edged, slightly curved with ridged back. Both sides etched with foliate scrolls. Right side includes Brazilian Royal Coat-of-Arms with "VIVAO IMPERADOR" in a scroll surmounted by mitre like crown and a flaming torch at top. Neared hilt is maker's name in script; "A + E Heuller & Cie A. Solingen". On the left side the etching is faded but includes the mitre like crown. Hilt: brass with wide pierced foliate guard with "PIIo" surmounted by a Crown within a wreath, and a forward roll at the top. Knuckle guard extends back to an abbreviated pommel which is part of the grip top strap. Grip is ridged wood covered with shagreen and bound with copper wire. Leather scabbard cushion. Scabbard: copper/brass alloy over wood core. two reinforcing ferrules with ring hanger swivels. Chape is typical flanged type.
