Beschreibung
Hand folding fan, with painted leaf (both sides) and pierced and carved ivory sticks and guards. Painted by Thomas Robins the Elder, an 18th century fan and landscape artist; spring/summer 1740. The front depicts a number of annotated elements: 1) The Well and Its Conveniences; 2) Lady Stapleton's House; 3) The Church and part of ye Town; 4) Stapleton's Dog Kennel. The painting also depicts a number of people, including a seated man sketching who is probably the artist himself. The reverse depicts the Assembly Room (Powers Court) and Fire Engine house. The fan was probably commissioned by Lady Stapleton.
