Description
Coin, a silver shilling of Elizabeth I. This coin is from hoard of 251 coins found in Winchcombe, Gloucestershire on 23 October 1997 by Mr T. Smith, Mr F. Christopher and Mr J. Biddle, along with sherds from a small pottery jug.
The obverse shows a crowned bust of Elizabeth facing left, which has been defaced with three deep cut marks across the face. The reverse shows a quartered shield within a ring. Three lions sit in the top right and bottom left quarters while three fleur de lis sit in the top left and bottom right quarters. It features a tun initial mark in both inscriptions and was minted in London, 1591-5
