Description
Pair of brass candlesticks with stamped decoration designed by Ernest Gimson. These candlesticks came to the Art Gallery & Museum by a strange route. During World War II much metalwork was melted down make munitions, and people handed in small domestic pieces like these. The curator of the museum, D W Herdman, was asked to go through the heap to check that there was nothing of artistic value in the heap. He discovered one of the candlesticks. The second was brought in the following day, as the owner had clearly wanted to retain one, but then decided to hand it in. Instead of being melted down, they eventually became part of the museum's collection.
