Description
Sword of takouba type, and scabbard with baldric. Probably of Hausa manufacture, from Bornu region in northern Nigeria. The sword has a large domed pommel with hand grip and guards covered in leatherwork. The steel blade tapers to a small rounded point. The leather-covered scabbard has a recessed central panel and is covered in stamped decoration. A metal openwork plate protects the top of the scabbard, which has a chape. There are two leather attachment points on the scabbard with decorative green leather and brass studs which link to a dark red baldric with tassels. Collected by Lieut Col Robert L. Beasley DSO between 1901 and 1906.
