Gestingthorpe Hall,
Castle Hedingham,
Essex.
Dear Sir.
I ought, ere this, to have written you. but, I fear during Christmas time, my letters have been rather laid on one side –
I wish to thank you [heartily], for the kind thought which prompted you to write to Colonel Murray – and, also, for your generous gift of the print of the Ven. Archdeacon Wilberforce’s portrait –
All this, enhances the value of my gift to my dear old friend.
I assure you your goodness has touched me.
I always feel, that, for the many kindnesses which I receive from people, some of whom do not even know me, I am indebted to my dear son.
Through him I have found some real friends, during the last seventeen years. Again I say “Thank you”. That was a nice letter from Colonel Murray. I have sent him a few lines – Yours very truly
C. A. Oates[i]
To
Sir Emery Walker –
[Footnote:
[i]C A Oates is probably Caroline Oates, the mother of Lawrence Edward Oates (1880 – 1912), who died on Scott’s Terra Nova expedition to the South Pole. CAW]
