Descripción
Clergy seat with high back and arms, made from English walnut inlaid with bleached bone designed by Ernest Gimson with Robert Weir Schultz and made by Percy Purchett, Fred Orton, Ernet Smith and Ward. Very full records of this piece exist, including drawings by Gimson and Schultz and entries in Gimson's job book. It was made as a prototype for seven seats in ebony and ivory at Westminster Cathedral. From the prototype, Gimson could tell whether the design had worked, how much time he should allow for making the ebony seats, and therefore, how much he should estimate for their price. This one cost £44.13.0 and the ebony seats were estimated at £423 delivered. It was kept by Schultz, who used it in house in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire.
