Descripción
Biscuit barrel, hammered, chased and pierced silver, brass lining designed by C R Ashbee and made by the Guild of Handicraft. It is not known whether Ashbee incorporated the stag finial into his design or if it is a later replacement, but it seems likely that he found it and included it because he liked it. It is finely cast and chased and the subject is one that appears in Guild work, and more widely in the Arts and Crafts Movement. The stag is perhaps a reminder of the rural hunting pursuits of the medieval past. Edward Barnard & Sons Ltd., which made the stag, is a long-established firm which has a claim to be the oldest manufacturing silversmith in the world; its roots go back to Anthony Nelme around 1680. It is known for such cast fittings.
