[1st page] Feb. 14. 1903. / Winterquarters / McMurdo Strait. / Dear Mrs. Jennings, / In case we remain as / we are now, locked up in the / ice for another winter, I am / writing to thank you very much / indeed for writing to my wife / at home and for sending her / such things as news cuttings, [2nd page] which she will be delighted to get. / It was very nice of you to send / us those cakes, they were excellent, / very much appreciated, and needless / to say they rapidly disappeared. / The cigarettes and the honey / have also arrived in excellent / condition. I have stowed them / away until I know whether / we are coming up to Lyttlelton / this year or next. If we don't / happen to break out soon we / [3rd page] shall be sorry we didn't keep some / of our luxuries for the coming / winter. I still hope however / that in April some time I shall / be able to avail myself of your / kind invitation to come straight up / to you as soon as the ship / arrives in Lyttelton. I think it / is very forgiving of you [inserted above] 'to ask me' for I / feel I was very rude in refusing / the hospitality offered me by Dr. / Jennings when we arrived in 1901. / My only excuse is that I had / very little time to myself, between / my birdskinning and public / entertainments, and I felt that / [4th page] my wife had first right to claim / every spare minute. But now / that I know you & your husband / I have the greatest pleasure in / saying that I shall not hesitate to make a bee-line for "O Takaro" / in the least disreputable rig I / can scrape together. I'm afraid / it won't be up to much, but / your husband tells me my things / are stowed away with lavender ! / Very many thanks for your / kind letter & good wishes, / believe me yours very sincerely, / Edward A.
