Description
Lidded jar by Bernard Moore with painted decoration of bats and stars and a flambé glaze. This type of jar is based on a Chinese shape known as a ginger jar in Europe. When they were first exported from China they often carried ginger, but in China were used as general storage jars. With the interest from the 1870s and 80s in Chinese and Japanese style, potters started to experiment with Chinese shapes and glazes - although in this case the decoration is very whimsical and western: the Art Gallery & Museum's accession register describes the jar as 'decorated to suggest English Twilight'.
