Description
Panel of Italian walnut carved in floral motifs designed and made by George Jack. The panel may have been shown at the 1890 Arts and Crafts Exhibition. Jack wrote a book on woodcarving, in which he stated 'we do not make carvings to hang on a wall and be admired altogether on their own account. They must decorate some object'. This piece was made as the writing flap of a bureau, but was given by Jack to a fellow architect, Charles Winmill, and has been hung on the wall and admired for its own sake ever since.
