Ambrose Heal (designer), Heal & Son (maker)

Rectangular table made with a chestnut top and oak base designed by Ambrose Heal and made by Heal & Son. The table came from the family of F.L. Griggs, the etcher who lived in Chipping Campden. It is not known when Griggs bought this table but a similar one or this one was shown at the 1916 Arts and Crafts exhibition and was illustrated in The Studio. The small pieces of wood let into the surface of the table seem to have been done in imitation of the double-dovetails used by Sidney Barnsley. They play some part in holding together the planks of wood but unlike Barnsley’s joints they do not extend through the full depth of the timber. Some of them have been damaged when the table top was scrubbed.
