Description
Dwarf cabinet made of walnut designed by Stanley Webb Davies and made by Brian Braithwaite. According to the maker, Brian Braithwaite the cabinet was his 'coming-out' piece after two years training before becoming a journeyman. It was a scaled down version of a piece he had been working on. It was probably intended as an exhibition piece or simply made on spec as it was still in Davies' possession at the time of his death. The costing book shows that it was job 1556 made by Braithwaite in 253 1/2 hours with another 27 1/4 done by others over a period of five months. Materials and labour seem to add up to just under £41 and a price of £56.7.8 is noted in the book. Braithwaite was a late starter, a Board of Trade trainee, he recalled that the hours included included the design and getting the timber etc. 'even though I was always a slow worker'.
