Description
Polished steel fire iron rests with semi -circular front supports and convex roundels at the top designed by Ernest Gimson and made by Steve Mustoe and Alfred Bucknell. Fire irons and tools were among the most demanding work of the blacksmiths. C R Ashbee recalled a visit to Gimson's smithy: 'In the middle of our talk Gimson suddenly seized the iron fire calipers. "There!" said he. "Can any smith of yours make a piece like that? Oh yes you may well may pore over it - it's the most difficult double joint you can forge. Oh yes you may well pore over it. Can they? Can they?"'
