Ducklings carved in boxwood with ebony inlay and on a laburnum stand by William Simmonds. Born in Istanbul, Simmonds studied painting under Walter Crane at the Royal College of Art. During World War One he was a draughtsman working on tank and aircraft design. Simultaneously he took up carving and puppet-making and made friends with artists involved in the Arts and Crafts Movement. He and his wife Eve, an embroiderer, moved to Oakridge Lynch near Cirencester in 1919.
