Description
Sword of takouba type carried by Hausa people, from Bornu region in northern Nigeria. The sword has a large ovoid pommel with copper alloy covered hand grip and guards covered in leatherwork. The steel blade tapers to a small rounded point and has three longitudinal grooves on the blade. The middle groove extends to almost half way down the blade, the two outers terminate higher up with a stamped symbol, possibly of a crescent moon. Collected by Lieut Col Robert L. Beasley DSO between 1901 and 1906.
