Descrizione
High backed settle designed by M H Baillie Scott, and made by J P White's Phghtle Works. The settle was an item of furniture favoured by Arts and Crafts designers for its association with nostalgic ideas of 'hearth and home'. Wooden settles like this, with sides to keep out the draughts, were made all over the country in the 18th and 19th centuries and were still commonly used in farmhouses and country inns at the end of the Victorian period. The catalogue of furniture made by the Pyghtle Works shows that this settle cost £10.10.0 in 1902.
