Thrown and turned stoneware vase with incised decoration made by Robert Wallace Martin. The design of prunus-like and star-shaped flowering branches is typical of the Japanese influenced floral designs produced by the Martin Brothers from around 1885-1900. Robert Wallace Martin trained as a stonemason and then worked as a sculptor's assistant. He designed most of the Martin Brothers pottery and decoration, although from the 1880s he brgan to concentrate more on modelling.
