Earthenware cider jar with painted slip decoration made by Michael Cardew at Winchcombe Pottery, circa 1930. Cardew made many cider jars. He was fascinated by 'the completeness of the shape'. He wasn't sure that the shape would sell, and said, 'I did not realise then what a long and respectable ancestry they had, and thought that they were something I had invented for myself.'
