Oval plate with slip decoration made at Winchcombe pottery, probably thrown by Elijah Comfort and decorated by Michael Cardew, circa 1930. Comfort was a potter at Beckett's Pottery that Cardew acquired in 1926, and came back to throw the bread crocks, washing pans and flower pots he had made at the old pottery. When demand for these fell, Cardew encouraged him to try other shapes, which were decorated by Cardew or Sid Comfort.
