Sporting cup, gilt copper, hammered shallow bowl on a cast stem and foot designed by C R Ashbee and made by the Guild of Handicraft. This piece was exhibited at the 1896 Arts and Crafts exhibition with a group of metalwork including the mustard pot (Cat.00). A slightly simpler version of this design, with plain brackets and a circular bowl, was shown in 1893, and another, with plain bowl but cast brackets, appeared in The Studio in 1900.*1. The design seems to be based on German pieces such as a lobed standing cup of about 1620 by Michael Muller of Nurnberg in the V&A.*2 This has a similarly lobed bowl and cast term figures on an openwork stem.
