Small dagger and sheath from northern Nigeria. Wooden handle with fan-shaped upper end and sloping shoulders. A transverse line is cut around the circumference of the handle at the top of the shoulders. Brown leather sheath with scored, stamped and black dye decoration and a strip of reptile skin at upper end, a strip of leather bound around the lower end to form a terminal. There is a smaller strip towards the upper end which was probably for suspension. Collected by Lieut Col Robert L. Beasley DSO between 1901 and 1906.
