Axe from Bornu or Bauchi regions of northern Nigeria. Iron blade with incised linear decoration set perpendicularly into a sinuous wooden shaft which swells at the upper end, and which is covered in reptile skin. At the base of the shaft is an iron spiral which forms a ferrule. Near the middle of the shaft is a leather strap with remains of iron chain links. Collected by Lieut Col Robert L. Beasley DSO between 1901 and 1906.
