Partial letter from May Morris to Emery Walker (undated but the postmark contains ‘Kelmscott Lechlade Glos.’ and the year 1915. The month is possibly April). Found in Collected Works III (Earthly Paradise) by William Morris. 2 publication? But perhaps you would not think the Introductions weighty enough to stand by themselves? I shall be rather in a hole if Longmans don’t take these two volumes of extra stuff. The Introductions are long, and a sort of survey of him and his work, and I’ve taken a lot of trouble with them. Then, there is the C. E., without indexes! It is no good saying why didn’t I pull the work through before. Conditions of life are so changed and there has been so much to be done to keep this place as I wish to leave it for others, that I have not been able to settle regularly to writing until comparatively lately. The enclosed is from an Unknown. I have no block to lend them, & I don’t see why you should lend. But I thought I would wait to answer the lady until I had shown you the letter. Too many of these little “Guilds”: I would rather they joined the Arts & Crafts & put their young energy into helping us along!
