Dear Emery Walker,
Many thanks for all your pains in getting the photograph of Smith Elder’s premises. They are quite good, though it would have been an advantage to get Miss Nightingale’s statue[i] relieved more completely against the light building in the background. That is to say, the camera should have been placed a yard or two to the left than it was for the photograph. This however is hyper-criticism. On looking again I am inclined to think that this photograph (the one in which the statue appears dark against the light building) has its advantages. If I copy it I might move the statue slightly

[Transciber’s Note: The letter has only been partially transcribed and there is as yet no signature but the handwriting, address and place of storage identify it as being by Philip E Norman (1842 – 1931, artist, author and antiquary. There are 2 further sides of script, including a small drawing of the statue. CAW]
