Handwritten letter dated 9th October, probably 1888, from Philip Webb to Emery Walker. Webb thanks Walker for his help with Faulkner, probably Charles Faulkner, who was a partner in the firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. Faulkner died in 1892. Found inserted in the book, Life of William Morris by Mackail, J.W. when acquired by the museum, shelf V18 - V19 . Part of the Emery Walker Library.

Letter from Philip Webb to Emery Walker dated 9th October (the year, 1888, has been added by Emery Walker). Found in ‘The Life of William Morris’ by J. W. Mackail 1, Raymond Buildings, Gray’s Inn, London, W.C. Thursday 9th Oct: 5 – pm [in pencil] [1888] My dear Walker Miss Faulkner[i] asks me to send a few words to [inserted you] in grateful acknowledgment of your kindness to her brother[ii] and herself in their trouble: she thanks you heartily. Mr Peck brought the specialist, Dr Bastien, to see Faulkner[ii] today. report not too good. I wd. add a word of thankfulness myself for your very ready and sympathetic help last night. Faulkner lies in much the same state you saw. Peck advised a night nurse, so I went and got one today, [unreadable correction] and she comes to Q. Square at 8. o’c this evening. [ii]Possibly Charles Faulkner (1833 – 1892), mathematician, Fellow of University College, Oxford and partner with William Morris in the firm of Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. Marshall’s involvement in the firm was as its financial manager and, like Philip Webb and others in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, he was also a major shareholder. In 1888 he suffered a stroke.
