Philip Clissett (chairmaker)

Armchair made from ash with a rush seat in a traditional design, made by Phillip Clissett. Clissett was a traditional chair maker in Bosbury, Herefordshire. He was discovered by James Maclaren, an architect, who refined Clissett's designs. Clissett made chairs for the meeting room of the Art Workers' Guild in London in about 1886 and Gimson went to Bosbury shortly afterwards to learn from him. Although he later made several new designs for chairs of this type, Gimson continued to make the 'Clissett chair' and this style was also made by Edward Gardiner and, later, Neville Neal.
