Cabinet of drawers on a stand made from a mahogany carcase veneered with ebony, walnut and holly designed by Ernest Gimson and made by Ernest Smith. Drawer fronts veneered with whitebeam and cupboard doors of solid mahogany. Exterior fittings of wrought steel and interior handles of silver. This piece originally had an ebony stand which was destroyed during the 2nd World War. The cabinet itself was badly damaged and has undergone considerable repair. Ernest Smith recalled that he had to use veneers of slightly different thicknesses, and wasn't allowed to sand them down as Gimson wanted the effect of the little pieces of wood catching the light. There are over 500 pieces of veneer, and all had to be cleaned of glue individually.
